I’m a mum and I was unknowingly infected with HIV – here’s why all women need to get tested

Náhled

A MUM was unknowingly infected with HIV and the stigma surrounding her diagnosis was so bad she almost ended her life. Emma McAnally was shocked when she received a positive HIV result about six years ago and has urged every woman to get checked. HandoutEmma is urging all women to get regular sexual health check ups and reduce the stigma around HIV[/caption] The 33-year-old, who lives near Glasgow , went to a sexual health clinic after suffering from on-and-off flu-like symptoms a few weeks after having sex. Around 80% of people with HIV suffer from flu-like symptoms two to six weeks after being infected. Tests revealed Emma was positive for HIV and for a while, the news had a devastating impact on her mental health , leading her to feel completely alone. She told The Mirror : “Thirty years ago, HIV was seen as a death sentence but now you can live a long and healthy life. “The biggest thing is getting over the stigma. “This can happen to anyone. I never thought it would be me but I am determined not to let it define me.” Emma wants to urge women to get checked and spread awareness about who this disease affects. She said: “I was in shock and disbelief. “I had been led to believe this illness didn’t affect my demographic.” Around a third of people living with HIV in Britain are women but they are more likely to be diagnosed later than gay men despite infection rates for heterosexual and same sex relations being about the same. This means poorer recovery and prevention rates for women, made worse by the stigma that surrounds it. “When I told some close friends and family about the diagnosis, the response was horrific,” Emma added. “I couldn’t talk to anyone. I went into a dark place mentally,” she continued. Sexual health charity, Terrence Higgins Trust, reported that three-quarters of those with HIV experience prejudice – and a third from family or friends. However life turned around for the mental health nurse when she became pregnant with her son, after she knew it would be safe. She says: “I didn’t feel alone or ashamed any more. I had something worth living for. “I’ve never felt as confident in my body and mind.” But misconceptions around the disease were even present in the hospital when she was in labour. According to Emma, she was told by a midwife that a water birth and breastfeeding would be dangerous for the baby – but this is not the case. Now, the mum-of-one is about to welcome her second child into the world with new partner Paul, who was completely supportive of Emma after she informed him about the diagnosis. Paul was told about two weeks into their relationship and Emma said: “He took my hand and said it didn’t change anything. “All that really matters to me is what I think of myself and how my family and close friends see me.” She added: “Don’t be scared of what you might learn. There’s hope and you can live well with HIV.” Neither Emma’s four-year-old son, nor Paul are HIV positive. She takes medication every day to keep her alive. Where can you be tested for STDs A sexual health or genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic specialises in sexual health, and can provide tests and treatment for many STIs. You can make an appointment to go to an STI clinic, or sometimes there’s a drop-in clinic, which means you can just turn up without the need for an appointment. You can go to a sexual health clinic whether you’re male or female, whatever your age, regardless of whether or not you have STI symptoms. If you’re under 16, the service is still confidential and the clinic won’t tell your parents. You may be asked:

  • when you last had sex
  • whether you’ve had unprotected sex
  • whether you have any symptoms
  • why you think you might have an infection

I won’t go out since giving up Botox because I hate my wrinkly forehead – life’s depressing enough without seeing it

THE economic downturn has hit the beauty industry hard, with more than a quarter of women cutting back on cosmetic luxuries. We meet three women who are going to extreme lengths to save money on self-care… Business owner Natalie Ward, 36 from Surrey says: ‘I avoid looking myself now I’ve stopped having botox’ Supplied by Natalie Ward Lisa Marley now makes her own beauty products and saves hundreds of poundsShot by Shannen Lythgoe ‘Making my own beauty products has saved me £800’  Lisa Marley, 48, is a plant-based chef and nutrition coach and lives in Whitstable, Kent, with her husband Nathan, 46, a care specialist. Looking in the mirror, I carefully applied the home-made bronzer I’d just whipped up in my kitchen using arrowroot. But no matter how much I tried to rub it into my face, it was just too gloopy, and by the end, I looked like a soldier in camouflage! Like many people, my finances have been impacted by the rising of cost of everything from food to electricity , so I’ve been saving money by swapping high-end beauty products for home-made, natural versions – including a bronzing powder made out of cocoa powder and cornstarch. I’ve always had a good skincare routine, and my favourite brands were Pai and Ren, plus I loved Clarins and Charlotte Tilbury for make-up. But in June 2021, I totted up what I spent and was shocked that my moisturiser, eye-brightening cream, face oil and cosmetics came to more than £150 a month. I decided to try making my own products – as a chef, I was curious to see what I could create with natural ingredients. I started with avocado, oat and coconut oil face masks, and was impressed with how hydrated my skin felt afterwards. Next, I mashed banana and coconut oil as a hair mask and made a lemon juice, cucumber and water toner, which was refreshing. Before long, I’d stopped using most of my shop-bought cosmetics. My husband Nathan was pleased, as he doesn’t like heavy make-up, and my mum Margo, 72, asked me to make her hair and face masks, too. A few weeks later, I was cooking a curry and spilled turmeric on the worktop. The yellow pigment left a stain, but it was a lightbulb moment, as I realised if I added a small amount of turmeric to my moisturiser, it would give me a glow. But make-up has proved harder. I tried to make mascara from coconut oil, aloe vera gel, grated soy wax and cacao powder. It wasn’t the same, but I knew it was a case of trial and error. I ordered a huge tub of organic shea butter from Amazon for £6 and started using it as a base, because I’d seen it listed as an ingredient in various products and knew it was a fantastic emollient. I discovered that if you heat it in a pan or microwave, mix it with a small amount of almond or coconut oil, then add cocoa powder, you can make a brow filler, as well as contouring cream. You can also create foundation by adding it to vitamin E oil and cocoa powder. I love using natural mica (a stone mineral) pigments, too, as they have sparkle. I discovered beetroot and blackberry juice gives a brilliant lip stain and you can add coconut oil for a glossy look. Now, I use shea butter as a cleanser, followed by a spritz of cucumber water, before moisturising with vitamin E, which I warm in my hands.  I also do an avocado face mask once a week and a lemon and sea salt body scrub every other day. The only shop-bought products I can’t give up are foundation and mascara.  While I’ve saved around £800 so far, I still look at high-end beauty adverts and can’t wait to be able to buy them again when the financial situation allows. But for now, I’ll make do with my DIY alternatives – except the arrowroot bronzer! ‘I let my husband cut and colour my hair’ Alex Howard, 32, is a development technologist and lives in St Neots, Cambridgeshire, with her husband James, 30, a warehouse operative, and their children Leo, five, and four-year-old twins Matilda and Max. Perched on a chair in my kitchen, I took a deep breath as my husband James picked up a pair of scissors and began to hack at my long hair. What your sex noises say about your relationship – and 5 ways to improve it

What your noises about your relationship ways improve

DO you give it the big “ooh” between the sheets? We decode those weird sex sounds so you don’t have to. If there’s one time we make weird noises, it’s during sex . A survey of almost 2,000 Brits found the thing you most fear hearing is your partner calling out someone else’s name GettyFrom moans and groans to ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’, it might seem involuntary, but those sounds can say a lot about you[/caption] From moans and groans to “oohs” and “aahs”, it might seem involuntary, but those sounds can say a lot about you and your relationship . A survey of almost 2,000 Brits by preloved retail site Vivastreet found the thing you most fear hearing is your partner calling out someone else’s name. Meanwhile, the noisiest in bed tend to be new couples, with a survey by Illicitencounters.com finding 73% of women and 68% of men are more vocal at the start of a sexual relationship. So what do your sounds signal, and which could boost your sex life?  Which noise do you make? HEAVY BREATHING You’ll be pleased to hear that sex counts as light to moderate exercise – the average steamy sesh uses roughly the same amount of energy as playing ping pong or doing the fox trot. In fact, men burn 4.2 calories a minute during sex, and women 3.2, according to researchers from University of Quebec, Montreal – and it’s cheaper than the gym!  GettyWhich noises do you make?[/caption] But don’t put all the heavy breathing that happens during sex down to being out of breath or a bit unfit. Our bodies need to release adrenalin to get aroused. The release of this chemical (from the adrenal glands on top of the kidneys) is usually needed to activate our fight or flight mechanism, but during sex, it’s used to increase our heart rate and send more blood to the man’s penis so it can get erect, and to the woman’s clitoris, so it enlarges and grows more responsive. It’s that spike of adrenalin that increases our breathing rate and makes us pant. MOANING While moans of pleasure are the noise 33% of men and 34% of women find most sexy, sometimes, something else is going on. Barbara Santini, psychologist and sex advisor at online sex shop Peachesandscreams.co.uk , says: “When a woman fake moans, they want their partner to orgasm more quickly and end the session.” Yep, it might come as an ego blow to some blokes out there, but according to one study, 66% of women have admitted to upping their moans and groans in order to deliberately speed up their partner’s orgasm. HIGH-PITCHED TONES Find yourself a few octaves higher at certain times of the month? This could be a good sign if you’re trying to conceive. Ovulation can affect a woman’s vocalisations and make us more audible in the bedroom as a result. Women have been found to have higher-pitched voices around the two days when they release an egg ready to be fertilised. The experts behind the study argue it may be an unconscious way that females signal high fertility to males , and that it plays into general beliefs that higher voices are more attractive and feminine.  SCREAMING AND SHOUTING It’s thought that women are loudest in the bedroom, with experts putting it down to their orgasms being more intense. Research by Illicitencounters.com found 82% of heterosexual women said they were more vocal during love-making than their male partners. Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

How OnlyFans became a global phenomenon where Scots creators rake in thousands per month

Náhled

IT HAS made millions and become a global phenomenon – but OnlyFans only got off the ground thanks to a last-ditch loan from a long-suffering dad. Five years after launching a BDSM and fetish website, Timothy Stokely was loaned £10,000 by his banker dad Guy to launch OnlyFans. Instagram/@timstokelyTim Stokely is the CEO of OnlyFans[/caption] Former Disney Channel actress Bella Thorne made headlines setting up an account Guy reportedly told him: “Tim, this is going to be the last one.” Last chance saloon proved a prime motivator.  OnlyFans is now one of the world’s biggest online enterprises and Tim, 39, has become rich thanks to his salacious start-up. He often shares snaps of his lavish lifestyle on Instagram with pictures of supercars and yachts. Millionaire Tim, once dubbed “the king of homemade porn”, parties in New York and London’s most exclusive bars, clubs and restaurants.  It’s not too shabby when he stays home either — as he lives in a sprawling six-bedroom mansion in Bishop’s Stortford, Herts, with  a gym, sauna, home cinema and huge driveway for his fleet of flash motors.  OnlyFans was launched in November 2016 as a site for creators to upload content, such as pictures and videos, for a subscription fee, with the platform taking a 20 per cent cut on all cash made. By January 2017 it had 100,000 users, swelling to a million  nine months later and ten million by July 2019. Meteoric rise But it was the pandemic that really boosted its popularity, with people shut and home and starved for entertainment.  In 2020 the founder announced his platform was attracting up to 8,000 new creators and more than 200,000 new users every day.  Covid coupled with celebrity sign-ups, like rapper Cardi B, saw the platform’s revenue explode  by around 500 per cent by the end of 2020. Last year the company was valued at $1billion (£839m) and now, more than 150million people use the site worldwide. But it hasn’t been without its hitches. In August last year the firm announced it was to ban sexually explicit material after some banks withdrew support. But six days later, following an outcry from its creators and sex workers’ advocates, it axed the plan. Since then the meteoric rise has continued. While some of the site’s biggest names, and highest earners are celebrities and porn stars, there are also stay-at-home mums  and dads  raking in serious cash from pastimes such as cooking or keep-fit. For many it’s just a lucrative side hustle that allows them to enjoy the finer things in life. But for others it’s a full-time job that pays the bills and funds a lifestyle they could have never achieved in their former workplaces. It’s believed that American model and TV personality Blac Chyna is the top earning creator. After joining OnlyFans in April 2020, she is said to make up to £16million a month from her subscribers, who pay around £16 a month for access to her pictures and videos. In 2020 former Disney Channel actress Bella Thorne made headlines setting up an account. She made £800,000 in her first 24 hours and is now estimated to have monthly earnings of £9million. But it’s not just about millionaires getting even richer, as there are so many success stories — including in Scotland. But founder Tim’s time with the brand ended a year ago when he quit as CEO. New boss Amrapali Gan — who joined OnlyFans in 2020 as chief marketing and communications officer, has grand plans for OnlyFans.  She has publicly backed those making adult content and is keen to also highlight the many people who use the  site to share non-sexual content  —  cooking, gaming or exercise. In an interview with Time she said: “OnlyFans is the new future of social media because we’re different.  “First, we’re safety focused. Our business model is a lot different from all these other tech platforms who are making money off of data, ads, things like that.  “We don’t make money unless our creators make money.  “And the subscription model takes away the frustrations people feel on these other platforms.” She added that creators had “realised that their content, their personality — that’s what’s valuable”.  “That’s where OnlyFans comes in. It was  a platform before its time.” Amy Atkin, 21 AMY quit OnlyFans after her first baby – but is back on and is more popular than ever. The  21-year-old, who first joined up at 18, said: “I really liked the idea of becoming my own boss. It was  empowering. “Then I fell pregnant with my son. I had a  difficult pregnancy and was really unw Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

From a parrot pulling out feathers to a dog’s food – your pet queries answered

Náhled

HE is on a mission to help our pets  . . . and is here to answer your questions. Sean, who is the head vet at tailored pet food firm tails.com , has helped with owners’ queries for ten years. He says: “If your pet is acting funny or is under the weather, or you want to know about nutrition or exercise, just ask. I can help keep pets happy and healthy.” GettyToday Sean helps a parrot pulling out his feathers[/caption] SuppliedSean McCormack, head vet at tails.com, promises he can ‘help keep pets happy and healthy’[/caption] Q) OUR lovebird-type pet Pippin, who is similar to a small parrot, is pulling out his feathers. We’ve put another bird in a separate cage beside him and he has lots of toys to keep him occupied. But the spray we bought that’s meant to prevent him plucking doesn’t work. We’ve asked other breeders but they say it’s a habit and nothing will stop him. Is that correct? Will he be cold this winter? Audrey Llewellyn, Cheltenham, Gloucs A) Feather plucking is a complex problem, with possible causes including malnutrition, mites, other parasites, pain or frustration. Behavioural reasons are common, but if Pippin is indeed a lovebird, he needs a mate in the same cage. And make sure his diet includes fresh, vibrantly coloured vegetables, a small amount of fruit, plus dark, leafy greens, pulses and whole grains. A health check to rule out medical issues is also a good idea. Q) OUR four-month-old cocker spaniel Rudi keeps barking while we are eating at the table. We have tried feeding him at the same time as us or leaving the room to eat elsewhere, but he finishes his meal quickly and starts up again. How can we train him to stop? Jeanette Samson, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire A) The theory is that if Rudi keeps barking, there must be some benefit, otherwise he would stop. Rewards might include table scraps, eating with you or having you talk to him — even if it’s just to scold him. He wants to be included, so to him, any attention may be good attention. Work on “settling” him somewhere like a crate, mat or his bed elsewhere in the house while you have dinner. And ignore the barking. A behaviourist can help if you’re struggling. Q) WE have a family of foxes that live under our garden shed. They don’t cause problems for us but are they any kind of threat to our cat Bubbles, who is five? As far as we know, they’ve never crossed paths. Gemma Metcalfe, Chiswick, West London A) In a stand-off between foxes and cats, the rule of thumb is that cats are generally in charge. Foxes cannot afford to get injured in the wild so they usually avoid scrapping with other predators unless they are cornered or extremely hungry. There have been a few isolated cases of cats being killed by foxes, but that has tended to be tiny kittens or unwell or very old cats. As long as Bubbles is healthy and well, I’m pretty sure they will hold their ground and the two species will co-exist just fine. And how lucky you are to be able to watch a family of one of our most beautiful wild mammals right there in your garden. Q)OUR nine-year-old Tibetan terrier Bo has diabetes and an underactive thyroid gland, which are managed by medication. However, she has a skin allergy which we just cannot get under control. She is currently on Apoquel tablets and we have also tried Cytopoint injections, all to no avail. Is there anything else that you can suggest? We are getting desperate. Michael Sturt Gateshead, Tyne and Wear A) Poor Bo. That’s a tricky set of conditions to manage at once. Without knowing pretty in-depth detail on Bo’s medical history, it’s tricky for me to give specific advice on where to go next in terms of diagnostics or other potential treatments. Your own vet knows best here, so I’d recommend having a chat. Remember, also, that it’s always an option to ask for a referral to a veterinary dermatologist — who will be used to dealing with these more challenging cases. Best of luck. From a cat allergy to an ingrown toenail, Dr Jeff answers your health questions

DR JEFF FOSTER is The Sun on Sunday’s new resident doctor and is here to help YOU. Dr Jeff, 43, splits his time between working as a GP in Leamington Spa, Warks, and running his clinic, H3 Health, which is the first of its kind in the UK to look at hormonal issues for both men and women. Dr Jeff Foster is The Sun on Sunday’s new resident doctor and is here to help you See  h3health.co.uk and email at drjeff@the-sun.co.uk . Q) I’M a 32 year old man and I’m dating a woman who owns a cat. I’ve been allergic to cat fur my whole life. She wants me to go over to her place and I know I’m going to be a mess, even if I take an antihistamine. Is there anything else I can do to suppress my allergy? Is there a way to desensitise myself to the cat fur? Jon May, East Sussex A) Degrees of allergy are common but most people don’t have allergies  severe enough to risk anaphylaxis (life threatening allergic reactions). Most cases of common allergies that cause  moderate symptoms are managed by a combination of avoidance and antihistamines. The majority of patients with less severe allergies can be treated with prescribed antihistamines which are much stronger than the medications available over the counter. For those patients with more severe symptoms, desensitisation (immunotherapy) is available. This involves carefully exposing someone to the allergen  over time, so your body gradually gets used to it. It’s vital that this is only done by a medical professional otherwise there’s a risk of worsening the allergy or triggering anaphylaxis. It is worth speaking to your doctor about, but in general, desensitisation therapy can take many months/years to be effective so the NHS reserves it for only the most severe cases of allergy. Q) I HAVE an ingrown toenail. It comes and goes by itself. Any advice on how I can stop it from happening as it’s so painful when it flares up. Sara Cole, Bucks A) Ingrown toenails (IGTNs) can be incredibly painful and we often underestimate just how much of an impact they can have on our  ability to get around. Most cases  are due to an overgrowth of toenails that dig into the soft tissue below, causing a break in the skin and secondary bacteria to get through. This sets up an infective and inflammatory reaction that causes the skin and soft tissue around the nail to swell, become sore and sometimes discharge. In general I would not advise you attempt to cut or dig away at the nail yourself as this can promote further tissue damage and trauma and spread the infection further. My advice would be if you struggle with nail care, cutting, trimming, fungal nails or deviated growth, to go see a chiropodist who can help you. If it is red, swollen, tracking up your foot, you cannot bend your toe or it is discharging, you may need antibiotics so you should speak to your doctor. Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

How you can enjoy the festive season without the hassles of winter colds playing havoc with your health

Náhled

CHRISTMAS is a wonderful, fun time of year but it can also play absolute havoc with your health. There are already winter colds circulating and soon we will be overindulging with food and booze, leaving us with gut issues. Echinacea has been a popular herbal remedy for colds and has helped people strengthen their immune systems for centuries And if that wasn’t enough, winter allergies will shortly raise their ugly heads. Jane Atkinson looks at ways to help keep your health in check over the festive period . Colds ECHINACEA has been a popular herbal remedy for centuries. It stimulates the immune system to be more effective in order to fight infection and the common cold and flu . And there has been research to show that A Vogel’s Echinaforce, which is made up of 95 per cent echinacea purpurea herb and five per cent of the root, can help reduce viral load of Covid infections and lessen the symptoms to aid recovery. The tests worked on both vaccinated and non-vaccinated adults. The tablets are easy to take as they don’t have much taste. Just give them a bit of a chew and you’re done. It costs £4.99 for 42 tablets. Well worth the money at this time of year! For more information, see avogel.co.uk . Winter allergies The VAX Blade 5 Dual Pet & Car Vacuum is currently on offer at £329.99 on the vax website I ALWAYS thought allergies were worse in the spring and summer. But winter can be just as problematic. Mould and pollen on festive firs causes so many allergies , there is actually a name for it, Christmas tree syndrome. It leads to wheezing, sneezing, coughing, sore eyes, and potentially serious asthma attacks. Pets cause chaos too. And guests can cause flare-ups. Even if guests leave their pets at home, their clothes may be contaminated with pet dander – microscopic flecks of skin shed by animals – which can spread all over your house. The new Vax Blade 5 Dual Pet & Car vacuum cleaner is a perfect solution. It has a huge selection of tools to clean in every nook and cranny. It’s normally £449.99 but is currently on offer at £329.99 at vax.co.uk. Overindulgance Silicolgel is a drinkable gel that helps people suffering with things such as heartburn and a whole host of gut problems SILICOLGEL is a gel that you drink if you are suffering from heartburn, reflux, vomiting, flatulence, abdominal pain, bowel discomfort, diarrhoea or IBS symptoms. We can certainly suffer from some of these during the festive season. It contains oxygen and the mineral silicon. Together, they coat the stomach and upper gastrointestinal tract with a protective lining that acts like a magnet to bind toxins – and excess acid and gas – so the gastrointestinal tract can function normally again and stop physical discomfort. When the stomach empties, everything is simply passed through the body. Magic. It costs £8.40 for 200ml or £10.49 for 12 x 15ml travel-sized sachets.See boots.com. Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en
