Algeria students protest against regime officials

Thousands of Algerian students today took to streets in the capital Algiers as well as in other cities demanding officials, who continue to work after President Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned, to step down, reported by Anadolu Agency. The 82-year-old Bouteflika resigned in April following weeks of popular protests against his 20-year rule. Today’s protests also came in celebration of the resignation of one of Bouteflika regime’s most prominent figures and Parliament Speaker Mouad Bouchareb. READ: On the events in Algeria and Sudan The protest, which turned into a march launched from the Martyrs Square in the capital, passed through the Al-Barid Square and reached the Central University, witnessed the participation of roughly 5,000 protesters. The Flag-wielding protesters chanted slogans demanding the […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

investigator calls tech sales Riyadh

The UN special rapporteur for extrajudicial killings today called for a moratorium on selling surveillance technology to Saudi Arabia over the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, as reported by Anadolu Agency. The call from UN investigator Agnes Callamard comes after last month’s release of her report on Khashoggi’s death. Khashoggi was killed and dismembered by a group of Saudi operatives shortly after he entered the country’s consulate in Istanbul on 2 October last year. Riyadh offered various, conflicting narratives to explain his disappearance before acknowledging he was murdered in the diplomatic building while seeking to shift blame for his death on a botched rendition operation being carried out by rogue agents. Israel says bracing militarily possible Iran escalation

Israel is preparing for its possible military involvement in any escalation in the Gulf confrontation between Iran and the US, the Israeli foreign minister said today, as reported by Reuters. The unravelling of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal under US diplomatic pressure, Iran’s downing of a US drone and its alleged role in the holing of oil tankers in the Gulf have driven up tensions and stirred war worries. Israel has encouraged the Trump administration to press ahead with sanctions against its arch-foe, predicting that Tehran will eventually renegotiate a more limiting nuclear deal. But Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz told an international security forum that Iran might accidentally stumble out of what he termed the “gray zone” of contained confrontation. Senator demands probe into weapons Libya

A senior US senator demands an investigation over reports that American-made weapons were found at a base of forces loyal to Khalifa Haftar, the East Libyan-based military commander, as reported by Anadolu Agency.  The UN-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA) said its forces found the weapons at a base they captured from Haftar’s militia in the strategic town of Gharyan, south of the capital Tripoli, last week. It said the seized weapons included four Javelin anti-tank missiles packed in wooden crates marked “armed forces of the United Arab Emirates.” In a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey, the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, voiced deep concern over the reports and said […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Israel police arrest Palestinian teenager Jerusalem

Mohamed Dawood Mahmoud was arrested on Tuesday in Al-Issawiya neighbourhood, following the arrest of at least 19 other Palestinians on Saturday. The Israeli campaign comes amid angry Palestinian protests in the neighbourhood against the killing of a young protester on Thursday. Mohamed Samir, 20, was shot with live ammunition in the heart and chest by Israeli forces Thursday during peaceful protests in the Al-Issawiya neighbourhood. Israel legal group campaigns Palestine event UK

A pro-Israeli group with close ties to Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has come under fire for “muzzling free speech in the UK” in what appears to be a desperate attempt to shut down a major event on Palestine in London this weekend organised by the UK organisation, Friends of Al-Aqsa (FOA). The frantic effort to block the two-day event known as “Palestine Expo” saw the UK pro-Israeli group, Lawyers for Israel (UKLFI), seeking cancellation of the conference by applying pressure on the German owners of the venue, Olympia London exhibition centre. Bizarrely, the self-styled legal group attempted to shut down the event through a recently passed resolution in the German parliament which defines the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Africa Palestine noble legacy that must never betrayed

Europe’s “Scramble for Africa” began in earnest in 1881, but never ended. The attempt at dominating the continent using old and new strategies continues to define the western relationship with this rich continent. This reality was further validated when I arrived in Nairobi, Kenya on 23 June. Although my objective was to address various Kenyan audiences at universities, public forums and the media, I also came here to learn. Kenya, like the rest of Africa, is a source of inspiration for all anti-colonial, liberation movements around the world. We, Palestinians, can learn a great deal from the Kenyan struggle. Although African countries have fought valiant battles for their freedom against their western colonisers, neocolonialism now defines the relationship between many […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Israel asks Hamas

Israel has asked the UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid to outlaw Hamas and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, Channel 7 reported. Sajid, who is in Israel at the moment, met with Israeli Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan yesterday in Tel Aviv before going on to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In 2001 the UK proscribed Hamas’ military wing, the Izz Ad-Din Al-Qassam Brigades, as a “terrorist organisation” however recognises its political arm as the body which governs the besieged Gaza Strip. READ: British government condemned after Daesh teenager’s baby dies During his two-day trip to Israel, Javid visited the Western Wall (Al-Buraq Wall) in occupied East Jerusalem and placed a note between its stones. He also made a […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en
