Turkey says second ship drill Cyprus

A second Turkish drillship will begin drilling for oil and natural gas in the eastern Mediterranean within a week, Turkey’s energy minister said, in a move which that could strain ties with Cyprus over jurisdiction rights for exploration, Reuters reports. Last month, European Union leaders warned Turkey to end its gas drilling in disputed waters or face action from the bloc, after Greece and Cyprus pressed other EU states to speak out. Turkey already has a ship off Cyprus and Cyprus issued arrest warrants for its crew in June. The second drilling ship, Yavuz, is currently at the port of Mersin doing final tests and taking on supplies, Energy Minister Fatih Donmez was quoted as saying by Turkish state news […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Tunisian bans face veils public institutions after bombing

Tunisian Prime Minister Youssef Chahed has banned the wearing of the niqab, the full face veil, in public institutions for security reasons, an official source said on Friday, Reuters reports. The decision follows a suicide bombing in Tunis by a wanted militant. Witnesses said the suicide bomber, who blew himself up on Tuesday, was disguised in a niqab. The Interior Ministry denied this. It was the third such incident within a week and came as Tunisia prepares for autumn elections and at the peak of a tourist season in which the country hopes to draw record numbers of visitors. Islamic State has claimed all three attacks. READ: Tunisia extends state of emergency for 1 month  “Chahed signed a government decree […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Greece seizes record amount amphetamine Captagon shipped from Syria

Greek authorities have seized what they described as the world’s largest single haul of super-charged amphetamine Captagon pills from Syria worth more than half a billion euros, Reuters reports. Coastguard and drug enforcement officers seized three containers full of the amphetamines, the financial crimes unit (SDOE) said on Friday. The operation involved 20 officers and landed 5.25 tonnes of the drug – 33 million Captagon pills – found in the containers shipped from Syria. “It is the largest quantity that has ever been seized globally, depriving organised crime of proceeds that would have exceeded $660 million (587.45 million euros),” the financial crimes unit said in a statement. Captagon is one of several brand names for fenethylline hydrochloride, a drug compound […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Regime attacks kill Syria’s escalation zones

At least 14 civilians were killed and 20 injured in attacks by Syrian regime forces and Russia on de-escalation zones in northern Syria, said sources with the White Helmets civil defense agency on Saturday, Anadolu reports. Airstrikes and artillery shelling targeted the towns of Kafr Nabl, Khan Shaykhun, Muhambal, Bidama, Hass, Bsida, Sarmin, Kafar Sijnah, Hesh and Alamerea in the Idlib province, the sources said. The attacks left 13 people dead in Muhambal and one in Khan Shaykhun, the sources said. Turkey and Russia agreed last September to turn Idlib into a de-escalation zone in which acts of aggression are expressly prohibited. The Syrian regime, however, has consistently broken the terms of the ceasefire, launching frequent attacks inside the de-escalation […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Olympics lifts Kuwait ahead Tokyo 2020 Games

Kuwaiti athletes will compete at next year’s Tokyo 2020 Olympics under their country’s flag after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Friday lifted its suspension of the nations after almost four years, Reuters reports. Kuwait was suspended back in October 2015 over a new sports law that the IOC said at the time was interfering with the autonomy of the Olympic movement. As a result, Kuwaiti athletes had to compete under the Olympic flag at the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016 and until now had no access to IOC funds. “The (IOC) Executive Board….today fully lifted the suspension of the Kuwait Olympic Committee as a result of the successful implementation of a roadmap agreed between all parties,” the IOC […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Eastern Libya firm close signing Libya port deal

Eastern Libyan authorities and US security firm Guidry Group plan to finalise an agreement to develop a major port in the east of the troubled oil producer, both sides said, Reuters reports. Talks have been going on for about a year to build a port in Susah, which would mark a rare sign of investment in Libya. Most of the country has been in chaos since the toppling of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. “The Guidry Group and the State of Libya through the Sea Port Authority officially signed the concession agreement on May 13 for the development of a multi-purpose, deep sea port in Susah, Libya,” the Guidry Group said in a statement to Reuters. “Next steps for the project […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

university cuts seats students Saudi endowment

Harvard University has ended an agreement with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s foundation to allocate seats for its summer school program, according to the university’s newspaper, Anadolu reports. The agreement was signed back in 2016 between Harvard and Saudi Arabia, and the university promised to allocate 12.5%, or 800 seats, towards students of bin Salman’s foundation, MiSK. University spokesperson Jonathan Swain announced the decision to end the agreement on Wednesday in a press release, according to the school’s newspaper, The Harvard Crimson. Swain, however, did not give a reason for ending the agreement. Several colleges and universities across the US have come under scrutiny over their ties to the Saudi royal family in the wake of the killing of […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Ancient Iraqi city Babylon designated UNESCO World Heritage Site

The ancient city of Babylon, first referenced in a clay tablet from the 23rd century B.C., was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Friday, after a vote that followed decades of lobbying by Iraq, Reuters reports. The vote, at a UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku, made the ancient Mesopotamian city on the Euphrates River the sixth world heritage site within the borders of a country known as a cradle of civilization. Iraqi President Barham Salih said the city, now an archaeological ruin, was returned to its “rightful place” in history after years of neglect by previous leaders. Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi also welcomed the news. “Mesopotamia is truly the pillar of humanity’s memory and […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Turkey fires central bank chief policy differences deepen amid economic malaise

Turkey on Saturday fired its central bank governor as policy differences between the government and the bank deepened in the face of an economic slump, volatility in the lira currency and high inflation, Reuters reports. Murat Cetinkaya, who had been serving as the governor since April 2016, was removed from the role and was replaced by his deputy Murat Uysal, a presidential decree published on the official gazette showed. No official reason was given for the sacking, but markets have speculated over recent weeks that Cetinkaya may be pushed out by the government because of his reluctance to cut rates. The central bank has faced pressure in the past from President Tayyip Erdogan to lower interest rates to revive an […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Israel hides documents about crimes against Palestinians during Nakba

Teams from Israel’s Defence Ministry started a decade ago to remove and hide documents from the Israeli archives related to crimes against Palestinians during the Nakba of 1948, Israeli newspaper Haaretz revealed yesterday. In a long report, Haaretz said that in addition to removing documents related to Israel’s nuclear plant and external relations, the Defence Ministry team has been systematically hiding hundreds of documents in an attempt to remove evidence of the Nakba. Haaretz noted that the removal of the historic documents was first noticed by the Akevot Institute for Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Research. “According to a report drawn up by the institute, the operation is being spearheaded by Malmab, the Defense Ministry’s secretive security department, whose activities and budget are […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en
