Israel social impact bond help Bedouins maths studies

Social Finance Israel (SFI) has launched a social impact bond to improve maths performance for high school students in the country’s Bedouin community, reports Reuters. The goal of the programme, to be presented to the United Nations on Wednesday, is to raise the number of students matriculating in higher levels of maths in the town of Rahat from the current level of only 15%. SFI is a non-profit firm established by Ronald Cohen and Yaron Neudorfer and cooperates with the government and business sector to create mechanisms for positive social impact. It has raised 45 million shekels ($12.7 million) in social impact bonds, also known as pay-for-success projects. France’s Macron speak Rouhani Putin Trump ease Iran tension

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday he would speak to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Russia’s Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump this week as part of a French initiative to prevent an escalation of tensions in the Middle East, reports Reuters. “The momentum we built over the last few weeks has, I think, prevented the worst from happening and overreactions on the Iranian side,” Macron told a joint press conference with his Serbian counterpart. “In these difficult conditions, we will continue our mediation and negotiation work,” he added. Macron also said he had yet to receive any “valid clarification” from Iranian authorities over the detention in Iran of Franco-Iranian dual national Fariba Adelkhah. Israel says EU’s response Iran recalls Nazi appeasement

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned a European Union response on Monday to Iran’s breaches of nuclear limitations, saying it recalled failed diplomacy with Nazi Germany ahead of World War Two, reports Reuters. “(It) reminds me of the European appeasement of the 1930s,” Netanyahu said in a video statement after EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said none of the parties to a 2015 nuclear deal with Iran saw its increased uranium enrichment as “significant non-compliance”. “Then, too, there were those who stuck their head in the sand and did not see the approaching danger,” said Netanyahu, who has often cast Iran’s nuclear projects as a mortal menace to Israel and the wider world. Iran denies seeking a nuclear bomb. […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Israel imposing ‘petty apartheid’

A recent move by an Israeli mayor to ban Palestinian Arab citizens from a public park has prompted many to ask if Israel is moving towards the imposition of what used to be called “petty apartheid”. Israel is by definition an apartheid state already and has been so since its foundation. Of that, there is no question. This is neither just an analogy nor a matter of opinion. That Israel is an apartheid state is a well-established fact under the UN’s formal legal definition of apartheid. Although the word apartheid originated as the Afrikaans word for “separateness”, the UN’s Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid did not limit its definition to South Africa. Among other […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Egypt revamps curbing NGOs critics unimpressed

Egypt’s parliament on Monday removed jail penalties from a law controlling operations of non-governmental organisations, but rights groups rejected the changes as insufficient, reports Reuters. Justified by officials to protect national security from meddling by foreign-funded charities, the 2017 law restricted NGOs’ activity to developmental and social work, with jail terms of up to five years for non-compliance. Activists saw it as an attempt to block humanitarian work and the law contributed to a decision by US President Donald Trump’s administration to freeze millions of dollars in military aid to Egypt for nearly a year. threat disband security personnel just

The Palestinian Authority’s latest financial crisis began in February after the Israeli government cut part of the tax money owed to its treasury, amounting to $140 million. The consequences of this have spread to various parts of the PA, including its ministries, municipalities and governorates. Now a number of senior Palestinian officials have made statements about the possibility of the security situation in the occupied West Bank being affected due to the financial crisis. This also poses a security threat to Israel, which is currently enjoying relative calm in the West Bank, for the first time in many years. “When the authority can no longer pay its bills we will start to send our security people home,” Palestinian Prime Minister […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Egypt opens museum commemorating Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz

A museum commemorating the life and works of Egyptian novelist Naguib Mahfouz has opened in Cairo, nearly 13 years after the Nobel laureate’s death, reporters Reuters. The Naguib Mahfouz Museum and Creativity Centre houses the belongings and personal library of Mahfouz, who won the 1988 Nobel Prize for Literature – the only Arab to do so. The centre, in a redeveloped building dating back to 1774, had been planned for years but had been delayed by financial and other issues. “I hope this museum becomes a centre of cultural radiation and a tourist attraction,” Egyptian Culture Minister Inas Abdel Dayem said at the opening ceremony on Sunday. Saudi Arabia’s dilemma pulls Yemen

The war in Yemen is entering its fifth year with no solution in sight. Every day thousands of people, including women and children, are injured and maimed. According to Amnesty International, “there is extensive evidence that irresponsible arms flows to the Saudi Arabia-led coalition have resulted in enormous harm to Yemeni civilians.” The war in Yemen has expanded from its initial stated objective of trying to install the government of Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi who was overthrown by the Houthi rebel group in March 2015. The Saudi coalition has extended into a pan-Arab war against Shia expansion in the region. Yemen has become one of the biggest proxy wars of our time involving a Sunni coalition, led by Saudi Arabia, […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en
