Israel arrests Palestinians West Bank raids

Israeli forces rounded up 19 Palestinians in overnight raids carried out across the occupied West Bank, according to the military on Wednesday, Anadolu reports. A military statement said the individuals had been arrested for “suspected involvement in popular terror activities”, without elaborating about the nature of these alleged activities. The Israeli army carries out frequent arrest campaigns across the West Bank — including occupied East Jerusalem — on the pretext of searching for “wanted” Palestinians. According to Palestinian figures, roughly 5,700 Palestinians — including numerous women and children — are currently languishing in Israeli detention facilities. Tutankhamun golden coffin under restoration first time

Experts have begun restoration work on the golden-plated coffin of Egypt’s boy-king Tutankhamun for the first time since the discovery of the tomb in 1922, the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities said on Wednesday, Reuters reports. The coffin and the treasured collection of Tutankhamun’s tomb are expected to be the centrepiece of the new Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) that Egypt will open next year near the Pyramids of Giza. British archaeologist Haward Carter discovered the tomb of the 18th dynasty king in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor in 1922. The tomb was untouched and included about 5,000 artefacts. Khayrat Shatir talks about visit Foreign Minister made prison

Arabi 21 has obtained a summary of the statement made by the Deputy General Guide of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood Khayrat Al-Shatir during the recent court session held on Tuesday as part of the retrial of the Brotherhood on charges of communicating with Hamas prior to the January revolution. The case was adjoined to 28 August for sentencing. Toward the end of the defence lawyers’ statement in the case, the deputy chairman of the Freedom and Justice Party, Issam Al-Iryan, asked the judge to permit engineer Khayrat Al-Shatir to make a statement absout what happened with him during the meeting with UAE Foreign Minister and the Assistant US State Secretary inside the prison in the aftermath of the coup. Yemen’s Houthis they launched drone attack Saudi’s Jizan airport

Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group said it launched a drone attack on Jizan airport in southwestern Saudi Arabia early on Wednesday, part of an escalation of cross-border assaults in the 4-year-old conflict, Reuters reports. The Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis in Yemen said it had intercepted and downed a Houthi drone heading towards civilian targets in Jizan. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saria said the attack disrupted operations at the airport. The Houthis, who control the capital Sanaa, have in the past few months stepped up their attacks against targets in Saudi Arabia. In response, the coalition has targeted military sites belonging to the group, especially around Sanaa. On Tuesday, the Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted and downed three Houthi drones launched […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Israeli poll suggests limited impact joint Labor Meretz Barak slate

A new poll commissioned by Israel’s Channel 12 News has shown that a joint slate amongst so-called centre-left parties would have a limited impact on their electoral fortunes. As reported by Haaretz, “an alliance of Meretz, Labor and Ehud Barak’s Democratic Israel would not change the electoral balance between the centre-left and the right-wing”. Were such an alliance to be created, Likud would win 31 Knesset seats in the September election – the same as it would without the alliance – while Benny Gantz’s Blue and White list would drop to 28 Knesset members, from its current 30. Meanwhile, an alliance of right-wing parties led by former justice minister Ayelet Shaked would win 12 seats at Likud’s expense, “leaving the […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

There is no reason to be optimistic about the election of the Algerian parliament Speaker

There reason optimistic about election Algerian parliament Speaker

It is funny to hear Arab and foreign television stations broadcast the news of the election of Suleiman Shanein MP as the new Speaker of the Algerian parliament. The news items usually end with the statement that, “It is worth noting that this is the first time an opposition MP has been elected to this position.” The funny part is that Shanein is being classified as part of the opposition after spending the last 25 years serving the regime, even from the outside. He accompanied the late Mahfouz Nahna, like his shadow, better than even some of the regime’s members. There are Algerians outside the regime who served it at the height of the political and security terror it was […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Israeli deputy minister demands halt Palestinian ‘takeover’ West Bank land

Israel’s deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely (Likud) toured the southern occupied West Bank Tuesday, attacking what she described as a “takeover” by Palestinians. According to a report by right-wing news outlet Arutz Sheva, Hotovely’s visit was organised by right-wing activist group Regavim, which campaigns against Palestinian construction. “It’s important to stop the illegal construction and agricultural takeover by the Palestinians, which is taking place in areas under Israeli control”, said Hotovely, in a reference to Palestinian communities living in ‘Area C’ – roughly 60 percent – of the occupied West Bank. Palestinians living in Area C must seek building permits from Israeli occupation authorities, permits that are routinely denied. German political party fighting Israel’s crackdown

“The idea of agitating against BDS played a big role here: to defame any kind of criticism of [Israel’s] reactionary, imperialist government as anti-Semitic and any kind of solidarity with the Palestinian liberation struggle as ‘terror support’,” Peter Weispfenning told MEMO. Weispfenning is a member of the Marxist-Leninist Party of Germany (MLPD), a political party in the western European country. A lawyer by training and one of MLPD’s candidates in the European Parliament’s recent elections, he acts as spokesperson for the party’s central committee. As with many left-leaning parties, MLPD is a vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause and an advocate of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. As a result of this position, MLPD has, however, found itself […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

anti occupation group questions presidential candidates Israel

American Jewish anti-occupation organisation IfNotNow has begun its campaign to press 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls on their positions on the Israeli military occupation of the Palestinian people. In doing so, the group hopes to “push the candidates past giving lip-service to a two-state solution without recognising the underlying dynamics and explicit moves by the Israeli government that are creating a one-state reality where Palestinians are denied basic rights,” explained co-founder Emily Mayer. IfNotNow was established in 2014, during Israel’s 51-day war on the Gaza Strip dubbed “Operation Protective Edge”, by “young Jews angered by the overwhelming hawkish response of American Jewish institutions,” according to the organisation’s website. Last month, a number of group members met with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en
