Libya’s Sharara oilfield shut down

Libya’s El-Sharara oilfield has been shut down, the country’s state oil firm confirmed on Saturday, Anadolu reports. In a statement, the National Oil Corporation (NOC) said it has launched an investigation into suspected valve closure in the Hamada area in western Libya. It, however, said production from the nearby El Feel oilfield had not been affected by the incident. El-Sharara oilfield produces more than 300,000 barrels of crude oil per day, forming roughly one-third of the oil-rich country’s production. Libya holds Africa’s largest crude reserves, but eight years of conflict and violence in the country since the 2011 ouster of ruler Muammar Gaddafi have hobbled production and exports. Yemen rebels claim drone attacks Saudi airbase

Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Saturday claimed to have carried out drone attacks on military targets in the King Khalid airbase in southwestern Saudi Arabia, Anadolu reports. In a statement, Houthi spokesman Yahia Sarei said the drone attacks targeted radars and military positions at the airbase near the city of Khamis Mushait. The Saudi-led coalition, meanwhile, said it had shot down a Houthi drone fired from Yemen toward the southern Saudi city of Abha. In a statement, coalition spokesman Col. Turki al-Malki vowed to “take all measures to neutralize the hostile capabilities of the Houthis within the framework of international law and rules”. Saudi Ambassador to UN: It is time to end war in Yemen Houthi rebels have claimed several drone […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Turkish counterpart discuss phone

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and his US counterpart Mike Pompeo had a phone conversation on Saturday, in which they discussed the F-35 fighter jet program and S-400 air defense systems issues and Syria, according to Turkish diplomatic sources, Anadolu reports. Cavusoglu and Pompeo discussed the F35, S-400 and Syria issues, particularly the Manbij, Idlib and safe zone issues, the sources, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to media, said. Following protracted efforts to purchase an air defense system from the US with no success, Ankara signed a contract in 2017 to purchase the S-400s from Russia. US officials argued the Russian system would be incompatible with NATO systems and expose the F-35s to possible Russian subterfuge. READ: […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

British Airways suspends flights Cairo seven days statement

British Airways suspended flights to Cairo for seven days starting on Saturday to allow for an assessment of security there, the airline said in a statement, giving no details about what had prompted the move, Reuters reports. “We constantly review our security arrangements at all our airports around the world, and have suspended flights to Cairo for seven days as a precaution to allow for further assessment,” the statement said. The airline added that it would never operate an aircraft unless it was safe to do so. UK’s Hunt says Iran dangerous path after seizing tanker

British foreign minister Jeremy Hunt said on Saturday that he was worried that Iran had taken a “dangerous path” after it seized a British-flagged tanker on Friday in the Strait of Hormuz, Reuters reports. Iran’s Fars news agency reported that the Stena Impero had been taken to the port of Bander Abbas, which faces the strait, after it said the tanker had been involved in an accident with an Iranian fishing vessel. “Yesterday’s action in Gulf shows worrying signs Iran may be choosing a dangerous path of illegal and destabilising behaviour after Gibraltar’s legal detention of oil bound for Syria,” Hunt said on Twitter. “As I said yesterday our reaction will be considered but robust. We have been trying to […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

What Sudan’s revolution revealed about traditions

“The people are now conscious” is the reoccurring reply from protesters, here in Sudan, when asked about their reasons for demonstrating. “We will not retire,” they stress. This statement rings true at the heart of the revolution, a sentiment shared by most taking part in the demonstrations. This revolution has not only shed light on some of the previous government’s corrupt enterprises and practices, but also how certain social norms allowed for these practices to continue unchecked. Though, respectively, it is probably more accurate to say that the people were always aware of these oppressive institutions and practices, through the protests they have found an avenue to express their discontent freely, without authoritarian crackdown. Some of these draconian practices come […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Saudi Arabia says evacuated crew member Iranian ship sent Oman

Saudi Arabia said on Saturday it had sent a crew member of an Iranian ship who was previously evacuated for medical reasons from a vessel off the Yemeni port of Hodeidah, to Oman, Reuters reports. Iran and Saudi Arabia are arch-adversaries in the Middle East, backing opposite sides in several regional wars including in Yemen where a Saudi-led coalition has been battling the Iran-aligned Houthi movement for four years. But Saudi Arabia in June said it had evacuated a crew member for medical reasons from a “suspect” Iranian ship northwest of Hodeidah after receiving a request for help from Tehran. The Iranian had now been sent to Oman at Tehran’s request after receiving the necessary medical treatment in Saudi Arabia, […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Gaddafi’s prime minister released medical care abroad

The man who served as Libya’s prime minister for the final five years of dictator Muammar Gaddafi’s rule will be released on Saturday to receive medical treatment abroad, Libya’s justice ministry said in a statement, Reuters reports. The authorities in Libya were no longer able to provide effective treatment for al-Baghdadi Ali al-Mahmoudi, who needed the care of international specialists, the statement said. It gave no information about the nature of his ailment. Mahmoudi was extradited by Tunisian authorities in 2012 to Libya’s interim government for crimes against the Libyan people during the 2011 uprising that toppled Gaddafi. He was sentenced to death in 2015, along with Gaddafi’s prominent son Saif al-Islam and other senior officials. Libya descended into chaos […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en
