Sudan opposition rejects report protesters’ killing

Sudanese opposition group Professional Association (SPA) has rejected the report of the investigation committee that acquitted the Transitional Military Council (TMC) from involvement in the killing of the protesters during the dispersal of the sit-in in Khartoum on June 3rd, reports Anadolu Agency. SPA spokesman Ismail Altaj told a press conference in Khartoum on Saturday that the investigation committee has attempted to acquit the TMC. ”This report has shocked the Sudanese people and the regional and international communities and proved that we need to reform the entire system of justice in the country,” he said. The investigation committee said 87 people were killed during the dispersal of the sit-in on June 3rd in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum. READ: Sudan says […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Iranian vessels stranded Brazil sail Saturday

Two Iranian ships stranded for weeks at a Brazilian port will be able to set sail on Saturday after the firm chartering the vessels obtained court rulings obliging state oil company Petroleo Brasileiro SA to refuel them, reports Reuters. The ships were stranded after Brazil’s state oil company, also known as Petrobras, refused to sell them bunker fuel in the wake of US sanctions against Iran. The refueling of one ship, the Bavand, started at around 5 am local time and that vessel is expected to depart at 9 pm and head directly to Iran with a load of corn, a spokeswoman for the union of harbor pilots, Sinprapar, told Reuters by telephone. Bahrain executes three including Shia activists

Bahrain executed on Saturday three men convicted in two separate cases, one involving the killing of a police officer and the other the killing of a mosque imam, the public prosecutor said in a statement, reports Reuters. Rights groups identified two of the men as Shia activists Ali al-Arab and Ahmed al-Malali, who were sentenced to death last year in a mass trial along with another 56 men convicted and given jail terms on “terrorism crimes”. Alleging they were part of a terrorist cell trained to use heavy weapons and explosives, the court jailed 19 for life and 37 for terms of up to 15 years. The prosecutor’s statement, which did not identify any of the men, said two of […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

bodies recovered from Libya shipwreck

Fifty-five bodies have been recovered so far off the Libyan coast, an aid worker said on Saturday after a wooden boat carrying hundreds of migrants capsized on Thursday, reports Reuters. Search operations are continuing to find other missing migrants, a member of Libyan Red Crescent told Reuters by phone. It was unclear how many people were on board and how many are still missing and feared to have been drowned after what the UN refugee agency UNHCR described as “the worst Mediterranean tragedy of this year.” Red Crescent member Abdulmenam Abu Sabay said the boat, which capsized near Komas, some 120 km (74.6 miles) east of Tripoli, was carrying 350 people, mostly from Sub-Saharan Africa. The Libyan navy on Thursday […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Turkey says ‘neutralised’ militants strikes July

Turkey’s Defence Ministry said on Saturday it had “neutralised” 34 Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants in northern Iraq in airstrikes on July 17-19, reports Reuters. Sixteen militants were “neutralised” in airstrikes on northern Iraq’s Qandil region on July 17, and 18 in airstrikes on the Karacak region on July 19, it said. The ministry commonly uses the term “neutralised” to refer to those killed but it can also refer to those wounded or captured. Oman’s diplomat Iran talks amid mounting Gulf tensions

Oman’s minister responsible for foreign affairs held talks with Iran’s foreign minister on Saturday, Iranian state media reported, as tensions mount in the Gulf after Tehran detained a British-flagged oil tanker, reports Reuters. Oman maintains friendly ties with both the United States and Iran and has previously been a go-between for the two countries, which severed diplomatic relations after the 1979 Iranian revolution. Washington and Tehran are in a protracted stand-off over Iran’s nuclear and missile programmes, and tensions have flared after Iran downed a US drone over the Gulf and the United States said it brought down at least one Iranian drone, which Tehran denied. Tensions between Iran and Britain also escalated after Iran’s Revolutionary Guards seized a British-flagged […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

The head of a Sudanese investigative committee said on Saturday that 87 people were killed and 168 wounded on June 3 when a sit-in protest was violently broken up by security forces, reports Reuters.
