Algeria win Africa Nations

Algeria won the Africa Cup of Nations for the second time on Friday when a freak second-minute goal by Baghdad Bounedjah gave them a 1-0 win over gallant Senegal in the final, Reuters reports. Bounedjah stunned the Lions of Teranga with a shot which took a wicked deflection off Salif Sane and looped over the bewildered goalkeeper Alfred Gomis and into the net. Algeria, who committed 32 fouls according to official match statistics, sat back after that and had to scrap for their win in a match that was certainly not a classic but was tense and gripping throughout. Senegal, beaten by Cameroon on their only previous appearance in the final in 2002, were awarded a penalty for handball in the […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

sanctions Hezbollah operative over 1994 attack

The US on Friday designated a senior Hezbollah operative accused of masterminding the deadly 1994 attack on what was Latin America’s largest Jewish community centre, Anadolu Agency reports. The Treasury Department said Salman Raouf Salman is a senior member of Hezbollah’s External Security Organisation, and he coordinated the attack on the Asociacion Mutual Israelita Argentina (AMIA) in Buenos Aires that killed 85 victims. Hundreds more were injured and the building itself was completely destroyed after a bomb-laden van smashed through it before exploding. The terrorist attack is the largest in Argentina’s history. It remains unresolved, but the U.S. has pointed at Iran and Hezbollah as bearing responsibility. Downs Legitimacy After Claims Downing Iranian Drone

The US boasted of downing an Iranian drone over the Strait of Hormuz, admittedly in international waters, just miles off Iran’s coast, and thousands of miles from Washington. It claims the drone was “threatening” a US amphibious assault ship, the USS Boxer. The Washington Post in its article, “Trump says the U.S. Navy downed an […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Some 246 protesters have been killed in unrest hitting Sudan since April 2018, the country’s doctors’ body said in a press release on Friday, Anadolu Agency reports. The statement by the Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors said more than 1,300 protesters were injured during the same period. It said: “246 people were killed since the eruption of protests in December 2018, around 127 of whom were massacred on the day when the sit-in around the headquarters of National Army was dispersed.” Sudan: Protests renewed as differences within opposition on constitutional declaration surfaced The statement further confirmed that a six-month strike by the country’s doctors was lifted as of July 18. Sudan urged to ensure justice for raped women protesters

Sudan urged ensure justice raped women protesters

Sudanese women were a driving force during months of protests that ousted veteran autocrat Omar al-Bashir, but the sexual violence they endured risks being forgotten with the signing of a power-sharing deal, women’s rights activists said on Thursday, Reuters reports. Action must be taken to address scores of rapes committed during a deadly crackdown by security forces in June, and ongoing sexual harassment on Sudan’s streets today, they said. “There has been much recognition for the role that women have played in Sudan’s revolution, but now no one is addressing the sacrifices we have made,” said Hala Al-Karib of the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa. “We have numerous cases of rape committed by security forces, but still the same perpetrators […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Iran seizes tanker

A British-flagged tanker has been seized by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Iranian media reported today. The captured boat Stena Imperio was bound for Saudi Arabia, and the owners have confirmed they are unable to contact the vessel. The tanker was allegedly approached by a helicopter, and “unidentified small crafts”, in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the tanker’s company. A UK shipping official said: “We are aware that the vessel halted its course and is now heading toward the Iranian coast and we are investigating.” READ: Iran says it has seized foreign tanker as Gulf tensions deepen A spokesperson for Stena Imperio said: “We are presently unable to contact the vessel which is now heading north towards Iran. “There are […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

‘US poster child ineptitude inefficiency’

The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) has been in development for nearly 18 years and is now eight years behind schedule, said an American expert on Friday, calling it the “biggest acquisition disaster” in Pentagon’s history, Anadolu Agency reports. Tom Schatz, president of Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW), the nation’s largest nonpartisan, nonprofit organisation dedicated to eliminating waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement in government, blasted the high acquisition and maintenance cost of the F-35 JSF for American taxpayers. ”The F-35 is the poster child for ineptitude and inefficiency in US defence procurement,” he said. “The total acquisition costs of the fifth-generation aircraft now exceed $428 billion, nearly double the initial estimate of $233 billion,” said Schatz in an opinion piece at Fox […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

After Yemen, the UAE’s next target could be Libya

After Yemen UAE’s next target could Libya

Last week, the United Arab Emirates confirmed its troop drawdown from Yemen, which has raised questions about what Abu Dhabi’s next target will be. “Many people asked if this is also linked to the current rise of tensions with Iran,” said a senior UAE official who declined to be named. “I would say fundamentally no… But of course we cannot be blind to the overall strategic picture. It is very much to do with moving from what I would call a military-first strategy to a peace-first strategy.” Whether Abu Dhabi is serious about the drawdown and the so-called “peace-first strategy” or not, this decision confirms the Saudi-led coalition’s failure in Yemen. When it started its operations back in 2015, it […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en
