Can legal marijuana stop Mexico’s drug cartels?

legal marijuana stop Mexico’s drug cartels

Mexico is set to fully legalise marijuana, a move proponents of cannabis believe will help curb rampant gang violence. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has said he supports the decriminalisation of pot as part of a broader measure of the country’s security policy. Last year, the Supreme Court ruled that the prohibition of recreational use of marijuana violated the constitution and ordered lawmakers to come up with a legislative framework. Lawmakers have until October 24 to do so. Obrador’s MORENA party controls both chambers of Congress so legislation is likely to pass. Critics say drug cartels would just move on to trafficking other drugs such as crystal meth and fentanyl or move to non drug-related crimes like human smuggling and fuel theft. So will legalising pot put an end to Mexico’s violent drug cartels? We will debate that question with our panel on this episode of The Stream. Brexit showdown What need know about Saturday vote

The United Kingdom's deeply-divided parliament is readying to decide on the revised Brexit deal brokered between Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the European Union. Saturday's vote in the 650-seat House of Commons is expected to be knife-edge close and comes less than two weeks before the UK is scheduled to depart the bloc on October 31. If he wins, Johnson will have delivered Brexit, as he has repeatedly pledged to do since taking office in July. If he loses, however, the UK's years-long political drama over its decision to quit the EU in a 2016 referendum will once again kick into overdrive Al Jazeera's Rory Challands reports from Westminster. - Subscribe to our channel: http://aje.io/AJSubscribe - Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish - Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera - Check our website: https://www.aljazeera.com/ #AlJazeeraEnglish #Brexit Číst dále >>>

Turkey Erdogan gives briefing Syria ceasefire deal

Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has given a press briefing on a temporary ceasefire deal amid its offensive against Kurdish-led fighters in northern Syria. It came a day after Mike Pence, the vice president of the United States, said Washington and Ankara have agreed to a ceasefire in Syria. The ceasefire grants the Kurdish-led forces, that were Washington's main Syrian ally in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS), five days to withdraw from the so-called "safe zone" Turkey wants to establish inside Syria. - Subscribe to our channel: http://aje.io/AJSubscribe - Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish - Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera - Check our website: https://www.aljazeera.com/ #AlJazeeraEnglish #Turkey #Syria Číst dále >>>
