Saudi crown prince visit Pakistan this week

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman will make his maiden visit to Pakistan this week to ink several trade and investment deals worth more than $10 billion, diplomatic officials and local media reported, says Anadolu Agency. The Saudi Foreign Ministry has not officially announced his schedule but Saudi Ambassador to Pakistan Nawaf Bin Saeed Al-Malki late last month told reporters bin Salman would arrive in Islamabad on February 16 for a two-day visit. Private broadcaster Dawn News reported an unnamed Saudi Embassy official who said five trucks full of bin Salman’s personal amenities, including exercise equipment and furniture, reached Islamabad ahead of his visit. Much of the focus of the visit is to sign a deal to establish an oil […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Lebanon calls Syrian guarantees speed return refugees

Lebanon’s foreign minister urged Syria on Monday to offer guarantees on property rights and military service to encourage Syrian refugees to return home. Tiny Lebanon has been host to more than a million refugees from neighbouring Syria since the civil war there began in 2011, though some have returned as fighting has eased in more and more areas of the country. “In the process of encouraging returns, the Syrian government can make a big contribution, on top of the reconciliations that are already happening, by giving security guarantees,” Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil told a news conference in Beirut. Young Egyptians trudge through clean Nile

Hundreds of young Egyptians, including actress Mai El Gheity, trudged through the mud on the banks of the River Nile to collect tonnes of old plastic bags, bottles and other rubbish, says Reuters. The teens and twenty-somethings also climbed into boats to reach trash floating through the centre of Cairo during the “Youth for the Nile” clean-up – a programme backed by the government and other groups to raise awareness of pollution. will keep investigating journalist Khashoggi’s murder

The United States is still probing the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday, as US lawmakers continued to demand stronger US action to punish the perpetrators, says Reuters. “America is not covering up for a murder,” Pompeo said during a visit to Hungary, adding that the United States would take more action to hold accountable all those responsible for the US-based journalist’s death inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October. After initially denying his death, Saudi Arabia has confirmed that its agents killed Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and critic of the Saudi government. Riyadh denies its senior leaders were behind the killing. US lawmakers, Democrats and some of Trump’s fellow […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Turkey opens government vegetable stalls battle with inflation

Battling a sharp rise in food costs, Turkish authorities opened their own markets on Monday to sell cheap vegetables directly to shoppers, cutting out retailers who the government has accused of jacking up prices, says Reuters. Crowds queued outside municipality tents to buy tomatoes, onions and peppers in Istanbul’s Bayrampasa district, waiting for an hour for items selling at half the regular shop prices. OPINION: Has the conflict between Ankara and Washington come to an end? The move to set up state markets follows a 31 per cent year-on-year surge in food prices in January and precedes local elections next month in which President Tayyip Erdogan’s AK Party faces a tough challenge to maintain support. Traders blamed storms in southern […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Militant Iran taunts revolution’s 40th birthday

Hundreds of thousands of Iranians marched and some burned US  flags to mark the revolution’s 40th anniversary on Monday as Tehran showed off ballistic missiles in defiance of US efforts to curb its military power, reports Reuters. Soldiers, students, clerics and black-clad women holding small children thronged streets across Iran, many with portraits of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the Shia cleric who toppled the Shah in an Islamic uprising that still haunts the West. On February 11, 1979, Iran’s army declared its neutrality, paving the way for the fall of US-backed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. State TV showed crowds defying cold rainy weather and carrying Iranian flags while shouting “Death to Israel, Death to America,” trademark chants of the revolution. After […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

China dismisses Turkey criticism ‘brainwashing’ Uighur Muslims

China has slammed Turkey’s criticism of its policy against the country’s Uighur Muslim community, labelling the latter’s condemnation a “double standard”. Turkey broke its silence this weekend over China’s mass detention of Uighur Muslims, telling Beijing that its continued subjugation of the ethnic minority is “a great cause of shame for humanity”. In a statement released on Saturday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hami Aksoy said: “It is no longer a secret that more than one million Uighur Turks, who are exposed to arbitrary arrests, are subjected to torture and political brainwashing in concentration centres and prisons.” “The systematic assimilation policy of Chinese authorities towards Uighur Turks is a great embarrassment for humanity,” Aksoy added. Aksoy’s remarks were referring to widespread reports […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en
