Turkish drones start operating northern Syria ministry

Turkish drones have started operating in northern Syria where Washington and Ankara have agreed to create a safe zone, Turkey’s Defence Ministry said on Wednesday, Reuters reports. Turkey and the United States agreed last week to set up a joint operations centre regarding the safe zone to be established in northern Syria. No agreement has been announced on key details such as the size of the zone and the command structure of joint patrols that would be conducted there. A six-person US delegation arrived in the southern Turkish province of Sanliurfa on Monday to work on the establishment of the operations centre. The Defence Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that work was continuing to make the joint operations […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Tunisia electoral commission approves presidential candidates

Tunisia’s electoral commission said on Wednesday it had approved 26 candidates including two women for next month’s presidential election and had rejected 71 other applicants, Reuters reports. The Sept. 15 vote follows the death at age 92 last month of Beji Caid Essebsi, the first president to be democratically elected in Tunisia after the popular uprising of 2011. It will be the third free election in Tunisia since that uprising. Tunisia was the spark for the Arab Spring revolts that toppled a number of authoritarian regimes around North Africa and the Middle East. Southern Yemeni separatists tell Saudi Arabia evict Islah lose

Yemen’s southern separatists vowed on Wednesday to keep control over Aden, warning the only way out of the impasse that has fractured a Saudi-led military alliance was for Islamists and northerners to be removed from positions of power in the south, Reuters reports. The separatists, supported by coalition member the United Arab Emirates, effectively took over Aden, the temporary seat of the Saudi-backed Yemeni government, over the weekend by seizing government military bases. The Western-backed, Sunni Muslim alliance intervened in Yemen in March 2015 against the Iran-aligned Houthi movement that ousted President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi from power in the capital Sanaa in late 2014. His government relocated to Aden. Southern fighters are a major component in the coalition’s battle against […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Syrian rebels shoot down government warplane northwest

Rebels shot down a Syrian warplane in the opposition stronghold of Idlib province on Wednesday as Russian-backed government forces closed in on a strategically important town, rebel sources and a war monitor said, Reuters reports. A pilot who ejected from the plane was captured, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which reports on the war using a network of sources. Syrian state media made no initial mention of such an incident. The jihadist Tahrir al-Sham, the most powerful insurgent group in the area, said its fighters had shot down a Sukhoi 22 jet that had taken off from a Syrian air base in Homs province. The jet was downed near Khan Sheikhoun, a rebel-held town that was hit […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Rabaa survivors ‘Sisi responsible 21st century’s deadliest atrocities’

Survivors of the 2013 Rabaa massacre in Egyptian capital Cairo have slammed Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi as “the man behind one of the deadliest atrocities of the 21st century” and called for a UN investigation into the killings. In a joint statement, former Egyptian Minister of Investment Yehia Hamed and former Minister of Planning, Amr Darrag, argued that “six years after the deadly crackdown that saw 800 arrested and over 1,000 killed, we still have no justice or accountability for those who orchestrated the deadliest day in modern Egyptian history”. Today marks the sixth anniversary of the Rabaa massacre, during which the Egyptian army – led by then-General Al-Sisi – stormed a sit-in in the Cairo square and slaughtered […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Gaza Shelling Strip

Forty-two-year-old Palestinian Kamal Al-Madhoun has made a living walking around Gaza’s shores and collecting shells. For the past 20 years Kamal has collected seashells and categorised them according to shape and colour before using them to decorate pottery. The shells are used to express Palestinian heritage and culture on the clay pots Kamal adorns with his art. Pieces can take up to two months to complete with his most elaborate work being a model of the famous French landmark the Eiffel Tower which required 14,000 seashells to make. Like all residents of the besieged Gaza Strip, the biggest hindrance to his work are the regular power cuts which are a result of Israel’s repressive policies and blockade on the Strip. These force […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Israel army admits blindfolding Palestinians against protocol

A petition to Israel’s Supreme Court has forced the Israeli army to admit that its soldiers break protocol by blindfolding Palestinians in their custody. At the end of May, a petition was filed to Israel’s Supreme Court by a group of left-wing activists who had compiled two and a half years’ worth of evidence from Palestinians in the occupied West Bank’s Jordan Valley who were routinely detained by Israeli army soldiers. During their detention, the Palestinians were handcuffed and often blindfolded for several hours, a practice the Israeli army has now been forced to admit breaks the institution’s own protocol, Haaretz reported yesterday. The petition argued that the large number of cases of detention and blindfolding points to “an obscene […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Gibraltar denies Iranian reports that releasing tanker

A senior official in Gibraltar has denied reports by Iranian media that an oil tanker seized by Britain’s Royal Navy is ready to be released, Associated Press has reported. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the report written by the semi-official media outlet of the Iranian government, Fars News Agency, which claimed that the tanker was due to leave on Tuesday night, was “untrue”. The Iranian super-tanker, Grace 1, was seized by the British in early July on the grounds that it was transporting oil to Syria, which would have been a violation of the sanctions imposed on Iran by the EU and the US. In response, Iran captured the British tanker Stena Impero as it […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en
