Morocco reshuffles cabinet keeps foreign finance ministers

Morocco announced a cabinet reshuffle on Wednesday, reducing the number of jobs to 23 but keeping the foreign, finance and interior ministers in their posts, Reuters reports. King Mohammed VI approved the list of new ministers submitted by Prime Minister Saad Dine El Otmani, state news agency MAP reported, after having asked him in the summer to arrange a reshuffle. The tourism, housing, youth and culture, employment, justice and health ministers were changed, but the interior, religious affairs, agriculture, energy, trade and industry and education ministers stayed in place. El Otmani’s moderate Islamist PJD party has seven cabinet posts in the newly configured government, while the liberal RNI led by business tycoon Aziz Akhannouch has four, including his own appointment […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Syrians hopeful return home Turkey starts

Turkey’s operation East of Euphrates in northern Syria cherishes hopes for Syrian refugees to return to their homes after they were forcibly dislocated by terrorist YPG/PKK since the conflict started in 2011, Anadolu reports. Syrians living in Turkey’s southeastern Sanliurfa province are looking forward to the arrangements for the operation, as they want to return to home located just across the border. Ahmet Halaf, a refugee in Sanliurfa, told Anadolu Agency that he left Syria five years ago with 10 members of his family and settled in Turkey. “My house is just across the border,” Halaf said, and added: “YPG/PKK came and took my house and land. A so-called senior terrorist of YPG/PKK confiscated my house”. “Whether the terrorists want […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Egypt denounces Ethiopia moving ahead with Nile amid water shortage fears

Egypt denounced Ethiopia on Wednesday for moving forward with building and operating a hyropower dam on the Nile, which Cairo worries will threaten already scarce water supplies, Reuters reports. Ethiopia, the source of the Blue Nile which joins the White Nile in Khartoum and runs on to Egypt, says the dam will not disrupt the river’s flow and hopes the project will transform it into a power hub for the electricity-hungry region. A diplomatic standoff has heightened tension between the countries, which have held on-again-off-again talks over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) for years. They signed a “declaration of principles” with Sudan in 2015 as a basis for negotiations, but no breakthrough has been made since. READ: Egypt says […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

British Airways launches Turkish route after Thomas Cook collapse

British Airways announced the launch of a new flight from London’s Gatwick Airport to the Turkish resort of Antalya on Wednesday, once one of Thomas Cook’s most popular routes, as airlines jostle to fill the void left by its collapse, Reuters reports. British Airways, owned by IAG, said that the six-per-week service would begin on April 30 2020, and also promoted the flight with a British Airways Holidays offer. Thomas Cook collapsed last month, with its UK business entering liquidation. Antalya and Dalaman in Turkey were Thomas Cook Airlines’ most popular destinations for British travellers, according to data from airline database Cirium. “Holiday makers can look forward to another option when flying to Turkey with British Airways next summer,” said […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Tunisian presidential candidate freed days before election

A Tunisian appeals court on Wednesday freed presidential candidate Nabil Karoui days before Sunday’s second-round runoff election, his lawyer told Reuters. Media mogul Karoui was detained in August before the first round of the election and has spent the entire campaign period in prison pending a verdict in his trial for money laundering and tax evasion, which he denies. “The appeals court has decided to immediately free Nabil Karoui,” lawyer Kamal Ben Massoud said without elaborating. “His release saved our transition and the situation at the last moment … We were in a very difficult moment in Tunisia which really threatened Tunisian democracy,” Karoui’s spokesman Hatem Mliki said. Last week, interim president Mohamed Ennaceur said Karoui’s detention and inability to […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Egypt calls emergency Arab meeting over Turkish offensive into Syria

Egypt called for an emergency meeting of the Arab League over Turkey’s offensive into Syria, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday, Reuters reports. “Egypt condemned in the strongest terms the Turkish aggression on Syrian territory,” the ministry said in a statement, adding the offensive “represents a blatant and unacceptable attack on the sovereignty of a brotherly Arab state.” Turkey launched a military operation against Kurdish fighters in northeast Syria on Wednesday just days after US troops pulled back from the area. READ: Turkey will not bow to Trump’s threats over Syria safe zone  Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said the aim was to eliminate what he called a “terror corridor” on Turkey’s southern border, but European countries called on Ankara to […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en

Hamas launches ‘secret war’ against Daesh Gaza

Hamas is undertaking a “secret war” against Daesh and other terror groups in the Gaza Strip, Lebanese daily Al Akhbar has reported. Hamas told the newspaper that it is confiscating weapons, including long-range rockets capable of hitting major cities in Israel. The “secret war” has been launched in response to the explosions that occurred in August at two Hamas police checkpoints in Gaza City, which left three policemen dead and three others injured. The first attack resulted in the death of two police officers when a motorcycle exploded as it approached the Dahdouh checkpoint, west of Gaza City. The second attack took place in the Sheikh Ajlin area, less than an hour later and killed another police officer. READ: ‘Home […] Číst dále >>> Přeložit do en
